KÜRT Zrt. and GATE Nonprofit Kft. received support in a joint consortium for its project entitled “Identification of Unknown Malware Activity on a Cloud-Based Security Analysis Platform” under the tendering scheme “Support for Market-Oriented Research and Development Activity” in the context of the New Széchenyi Plan.

The nature of threats to IT infrastructure is changing. While viruses used to pose the biggest challenge, institutionalized methods have been developed against these threats. Companies manufacturing anti-virus software immediately identify newly emerged viruses and, within hours, incorporate adequate defense mechanisms into the databases that they distribute. These easily identifiable malware are variants of known viruses. However, completely new viruses built from scratch are still difficult to identify. Since harmful software have become more and more advanced, we now face so-called APT (advanced persistent threat) attacks that are much more complex than earlier viruses with a simple structure and operational strategy:

 

  1. They adapt, change and are able to modify their own code
  2. They are able to hide
  3. These are targeted software where the goal is not only to control the IT system, but also such unlawful activity as industrial espionage or data acquisition.
  4. Their detection may require significantly more resources than earlier

 

  1. Due to their nature, the involvement of expensive human resources may become necessary.

Our solution consists of a cloud-based security analysis platform and a filling algorithm family that enables effective detection of anomalies and investigation of causes. To achieve this, we focus on the following research objectives:

 

 

  1. Detection of unknown malware using static code analysis
  2. Dynamic analysis after the detection of unknown malware
  3. Creating a cloud-based, transparent running environment
  4. The effective collaboration between man and machine in detecting unknown malware

As part of the solution, the following will be created in the context of prototype development:

  1. A cloud-based security analysis platform as a service: in the course of the development, we create a service prototype that uses the client’s virtual cloud computing system to duplicate its own IT system, with the exception of highly sensitive sections. Here, the service provider carries out malware detection using the appropriate human and machine resources or provides it as a continuous service.

KÜRT Ltd and the University of Pannonia received funding for their project entitled “EWS – Development of the Prototype of an Automated Risk Forecasting System Based on Data and Process Mining Algorithms for Financial Institutions” under the “Promotion of Market-Oriented Research and Development Activity” grant scheme financed by the New Széchenyi Plan in the context of the Economic Development Operational Program.

The project is intended to develop an early warning system (EWS) for financial service providers based on the basic requirements of financiers with respect to credit risk management. As a result of the consortium partnership between KÜRT Ltd and the University of Pannonia, the early warning system is developed by specialists using complex data and process mining algorithms calculated on the basis of scientific methodological models elaborated by a university research team with comprehensive scientific expertise.

The basic functional requirements of the forecasting system proposed within the framework of the project:

  • the “full picture” with regard to the beneficiary, i.e. the monitoring and aggregation of all relevant risk factors,
  • provision of continuous monitoring,
  • the timely detection and indication of risk of default. Based on all this, creditors will be able to intervene in a quick and efficient fashion, which can significantly reduce the risk of actual default and loss for creditors. The proposed application contains separate modules for all relevant risk factors, which can be used independently, but together can offer a comprehensive picture of the risks related to individual clients. The system facilitates user decisions with multi-level and multi-function output indications and complex information.

Project KMR_12-1-2012-0039

KÜRT Ltd, TÜV Rheinland Group and Országos Kutatási és Szaktanácsadó Intézet Nonprofit Zrt (National Research and Consulting Institute Nonprofit Ltd) received funding for their project entitled “Online Virtual Multi-User Technical Construction, Verification and Education Infrastructure” under the “Promotion of Market-Oriented Research Activity in the Central Hungarian Region” grant scheme financed by the Research and Technology Innovation Fund of the New Széchenyi Plan.

Subsidy amount of the consortium application: HUF 562,020,659

The purpose of the project is to create a virtual engineering design, simulation, verification and training infrastructure, which is able to

  • generate an online virtual space where participants can log in and work together depending on their authorizations regardless of their geographical location;
  • make all means of communication in the virtual space available to the participants, as required;
  • safely handle the encryption of confidential construction data files;
  • support, if necessary, the repair and recovery of locally stored (pre-import) files by software and hardware (e.g. RAID, NAS, SAN, high data density or hybrid data storage solutions);
  • define interface and plugins slot specifications and standards designed for connecting to the virtual space, formally harmonize different data sources by their application and display them in the virtual space;
  • perform the tracking of plugin licenses used by different workgroups;
  • transfer the data from CAD and/or VIS user software into the virtual reality client program and translate the standard or quasi-standard formats of CAD and VIS software into the format used by the VR client-server system;
  • solve the encrypted storage and forwarding procedures for technical information in both on-demand and cloud computing environments, in compliance with the special requirements.

The project ends with the implementation of a virtual 3D server-client infrastructure where participants can rent the included technical, design, modeling and verification resources and services for a specified period and allocated to specific projects.

GOP-1.1.1-09/1-2009-0034

In January 2010, KÜRT Ltd received funding in the framework of grant scheme GOP-2009-1.1.1 tender scheme for developing a “Prototype of a Real-Time Log Analysis and Automatic Intervention System with Guaranteed Confidentiality and Distributed Data Collection”. The goal of the project is developing a prototype of a real-time data collection and log analysis system with better parameters than current log analysis systems, using the results of previous applied research.

In IT-based industries and companies, the application of security solutions for data and IT systems, such as log analysis, is getting more and more attention.

The current log analysis systems are static, “unintelligent” systems based on monitoring the frequency of events (incidents) and the coincidental occurrence of predefined events. Moreover, as alarms are based on non-real time systems, they are generated only days or weeks later, which makes it much more difficult or even impossible to intervene and remedy the damage in a timely manner.

Another problem is that log analysis is based on the subsequent examination of recorded log entries, which is a serious, often unresolved conflict between the company and the log analyst. The reason for this is that the logs contain extremely sensitive data related to the structure of the network, the users and the business activity (e.g. bank card details or information about internet banking transaction), and such sensitive information cannot be disclosed with third parties.

In our project, we propose a completely novel concept for the solution of these problems, which can revolutionize the practice of log analysis with its distributed operation and real-time processing capabilities based on innovative mathematical algorithms.

As part of the project, we will carry out a significant amount of scientific and research work in the field of log analysis. If prototype testing of research results and the theory itself produces a positive response to our initial hypotheses, we will be able to develop and market the new log analysis system in the context of a product development project, along with a wide range of related services.

GVOP-3.3.3

On April 4, 2006, KÜRT Computer Rendszerház Rt used the funding awarded under the GVOP-3.3.3 tender to launch its tender project entitled “The Innovative Development of KÜRT Ltd.’s product and service portfolio”.

Our project aims to create new, innovative and marketable security solutions that are able to prevent and eliminate security threats, mitigate potential damage and minimize the impact of potential losses due to IT risks through providing coordinated protection against injury, unauthorized access, unavailability or destruction to information, individuals and physical assets that are of value to individual institutions and businesses.

In order to meet the project objectives, the following research and development target areas were defined:

Development of methodologies for developing, designing and improving integrated security solutions

Designing software products that support the practical application of methodologies

Development of software products supporting IT security systems

GVOP-3.3.2

On November 30, 2005, KÜRT Computer Rendszerház Rt was awarded funding in the context of the GVOP-3.3.2 tender project for their application entitled “Development of Research Infrastructure Related to the Creation of New Research Jobs”. The project ends on November 30, 2006.

The project aims at creating research and development workplaces needed for completing the development activities of KÜRT Ltd. Research and development staff working at the newly established workplaces are also involved in the research and development activities of KÜRT Ltd, intended to develop new data recovery procedures and integrated security solutions.

Within the framework of the project, assets required for creating 12 workplaces for researchers were acquired.

Jedlik Ányos program

In cooperation with the University of Veszprém, Kürt Ltd set up an Information Security Research and Development Center in early 2006, with the goal of developing integrated information security methodologies and tool systems. The center was founded with creating world-class, professionally and scientifically well-established methods and products in mind, in order to meet demand on domestic and European markets and increasing the competitiveness of Hungary. The total budget of the 3-year project is HUF 378 million. The consortium received funding under the Ányos Jedlik Program.
